When is the best time to visit Tu Le?

Looking to plan your trip to Tú Lệ? Wondering when the best time to visit is? The season of water pouring into Tú Lệ is typically in May when you can witness the breathtaking beauty of the terraced rice fields that reflect the sky amidst the Northwest mountains and forests. For those looking to experience the golden season of Tú Lệ, September and October are the best times to visit.

During these months, the rice fields turn a stunning golden hue, providing a picturesque backdrop for your travels. The weather during this time is also pleasant, with mild temperatures and comfortable humidity.

However, remember that Tú Lệ is a year-round destination with something to offer in every season. In the spring, the valley is filled with colorful flowers and fresh green rice shoots, while in the summer, you can escape the heat of the city and enjoy the cool mountain breeze. The fall is perfect for those looking to experience the beauty of the rice harvest season, while winter brings a magical charm to the valley with its snow-capped mountains and cozy homestays.

No matter when you visit, Tu Le will enchant and captivate you with its natural beauty and warm hospitality.

Tu Le Travel Guide – Getting There

While it may be around 250 km away from Hanoi, a 6-hour drive, the journey is well worth it. To make the most of your time, we recommend departing early in the morning so that you can arrive in time for lunch and enjoy the rest of your day exploring this beautiful destination.

If you’re driving a private car, you can take a couple of routes to get to Tu Le. One option is to take the Hanoi-Lao Cai Expressway, then head to Yen Bai city and continue on the direction of Nghia Lo. However, this route is considered to be a bit longer and has some bad road sections. Another popular route for motorbikes is the Lang Hoa Lac – Son Tay – Ba Vi Expressway – Trung Ha Bridge, following the QL32 direction through Thanh Son, Van Chan to Nghia Lo.

Once you reach Nghia Lo, it’s only about 50 km to the breathtaking Tú Lệ valley. If you don’t have a private car, don’t worry. You can easily rent a motorbike or a motorbike taxi to explore Tú Lệ. Alternatively, you can choose to trek and admire the scenery on foot, taking in all the stunning natural beauty that this region has to offer.

Experience

Sunrise Viewing

Start your day early to witness the beauty of the sunrise in Tú Lệ. The sun rises over the hillside, casting golden light down to the valley, blending with the mist, and gradually melting away to make way for the new pure rays. During the water pouring or ripe rice season, the sunrise will enhance the picturesque landscape of Tú Lệ.

Visit Fairy Cave

Located near the village center, the Fairy Cave is a popular attraction. The cave ticket price for adults is 50,000 VND, and children under 12 can enter for free. According to local folklore, fairies from the Khau Pha Sky gate flew down over 300 years ago to admire the stunning scenery of the earth, and they bathed in the Nam Lung and Nam Hon spring in front of the cave. The place where the fairies changed their clothes inside the mountain cave is called Fairy Cave. Every year on the 30th day of the twelfth lunar month, white smoke emerges from the cave, symbolizing the descent of the fairies to the mortal world. The cave is illuminated, and visitors can explore where the fairies bathed and admire the various stalactite formations.

Khau Pha Pass

Khau Pha Pass, one of the four great mountain passes, is a winding road that offers breathtaking views. Khau Pha is the easiest to traverse compared to the other three passes. According to the Thai language, Khau Pha means “Horn of Heaven” because the pass is often shrouded in mist, and the mountaintop appears to rise above the sea of clouds.

The 30 km long pass is located in the area bordering Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai districts, passing through many famous landmarks during the golden season such as Tú Lệ, La Pán Tẩn, Mù Cang Chải, Chế Cu Nha… For many years, Khau Pha Pass has been the venue for the paragliding festival “Flying over the Golden Season in Mu Cang Chai.”

Visit Villages

Experience the highland culture and way of life by visiting the Lìm Thái and Lìm Mông villages, located just 3 km from Tú Lệ. These two villages have some of the most beautiful scenery in Yen Bai. The red dirt road leading to Lìm Mông village can be slippery on rainy days, but the impressive scenery of terraced fields during the flooding season on both sides makes it worth the trip.

Take a Fairy Bath

A must-try experience when visiting Tú Lệ is taking a fairy bath in the hot mineral spring in Tú Lệ commune. The bathing pool is wide and filled with warm water at about 35 degrees Celsius. Thai girls and locals often relax here after a hard day’s work. If you witness the fairy bath scene, be respectful and discreet when taking photos to preserve the naturalness of the locals. If you prefer a more private experience, you can choose a discreet location in a resort in the town center.

Zipline Adventure

For thrill-seekers, head to the adventure park in the Nuoc Nong village in Tu Le commune, where you can conquer thrilling activities such as ziplining, mountain climbing, and high rope swinging. The zipline route, over 1 km long, allows visitors to admire the scenic beauty of Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai.

Moon Gazing

Experience the enchanting atmosphere of Tu Le at night, especially on full moon days. The moon shines brightly, casting shadows of travelers walking along the road through the town. In the distance, the sound of bamboo trees rustling in the wind provides a cool and refreshing atmosphere. The dimly lit roadside lamps are enough to see the passing figures. Stroll along the small road leading to the fields, stand on a bamboo bridge, and gaze at the moonlight shining down on the sparkling stream. This creates a poetic and romantic scene that is hard to find in urban areas.

Tu Le Travel Guide -What to eat

Tu Le, a highland region in Yen Bai province, is a destination not to be missed when it comes to discovering delicious cuisine. Besides the captivating scenery and cool natural atmosphere, Tu Le also boasts many local dishes and specialties that are sure to please any food lover and this travel guide will show you.

"Cốm Tú Lệ" has a distinct light green color characteristic of the rice variety. It is most delicious when eaten right after being made.

During the harvest season (September-October), visitors to Tu Le can try one of the most special delicacies in the region – Tú Lệ green rice flakes. They’re made from a precious rice variety with a dark green color, soft grains, and a slightly bitter aftertaste characteristic of the Tú Lệ region. Green rice flakes are often eaten with red berries, and bananas or cooked with duck porridge, sticky rice, and sweet soup and made into savory dishes such as green rice flake sausage and fried spring rolls. They have a distinctive dark green color and taste best when eaten fresh. The grains are soft, chewy, and fragrant and have a slightly bitter aftertaste that transitions into a slightly sweet and refreshing taste.

In addition to green rice flakes, Tu Le also offers other delightful dishes. Five-color sticky rice is a familiar dish of the ethnic people in the Northern mountainous region. The rice is made from the firmest glutinous rice grains for a perfect fragrance and chewiness, combined with forest leaves to create a colorful and delicious dish.

Lap xuong (Vietnamese sausage) is made from fresh and delicious pork and clean pig innards through meticulous and careful steps. It is presented to the table with a characteristic red color and unique aroma that will surely please even the most discerning guests.

Buffalo meat hung over a wood fire is a typical specialty of the Northwest mountainous region. Although processed in a more advanced way nowadays, using high temperatures for cooking the meat, it retains its traditional toughness and sweetness. Buffalo meat still holds a prominent position as a must-try cuisine when visiting Tu Le.

Conclusion of Tu Le Travel Guide

In conclusion, Tu Le is a destination that should not be missed by any traveler looking to discover the beauty of Yen Bai province and savor the unique flavors of the local cuisine. With its stunning natural scenery, charming ethnic villages, and delectable dishes like the Tú Lệ green rice flakes, Tu Le offers an authentic and unforgettable experience.
