Hoi An Japanese Covered Bridge – Quang Nam

Address: Hoi An Ancient Town, Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province

Japanese Covered Bridge (Bridge Pagoda) is a tile-roofed bridge in Vietnam with yin and yang roof tiles – a unique feature of Vietnamese architecture. In the middle of the soft curving walkway, there are narrow corridors on both sides to make a resting place—the entire Bridge made of wood, carved with Vietnamese motifs, and mixed with Japanese style.

People call it a pagoda, but there is no Buddhist worshiped here. The central nave is the place to worship a wooden statue of Bac De Tran Vo – the country’s guardian deity, bestowing happiness and peace to everyone, expressing the desire to have a peaceful, happy life.

This Bridge is also a unique work showing the cultural exchange between Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese in Hoi An. After more than 400 years of history, many tourists still love and seek the sacred Hoi An Covered Bridge.

This tile-roofed bridge in Vietnam has nine compartments with solid stone pillars at the foot of the bridge. The bridge deck is made of ironwood, with a walkway about 2m wide. The point that makes Thanh Toan bridge attractive is the roof. The roof is used with yin and yang tiles – one of the popular tiles, bringing perfect beauty and defying time. The symbol of the four spirits is on the roof: Long – Lan – Quy – Phung (Dragon – Unicorn – Tortoise – Phoenix).

This tile-roofed bridge in Vietnam has a design as a house with seven compartments. The central nave is a place of worship to show gratitude to those who built the bridge. The two sides are divided into three rooms each, where high wooden platforms look like tables and chairs in the house.
