Vietnam has many islands and archipelagos. However, not all Vietnamese can know and remember the island districts of our country. Below is a list of 12 island districts sorted by the alphabet.

01- Bach Long Vi Island District

Bach Long Vi belongs to Hai Phong city, an island district with an area of about 2.5 km2 at high tide and about 4 km2 at low tide. The island has an essential position in expanding the waters and delineating the Tonkin Gulf.
02. Cat Hai Island District

Cat Hai island district belongs to Hai Phong city, northwest and northeast borders Quang Ninh province, including Cat Ba island and Cat Hai island, total area about 345km2. There is Cat Ba National Park, which holds rare and valuable gene sources, including the white-headed langur recorded in the Red Book of the World.
03. Co To Island District

Co To archipelago belongs to Quang Ninh province, is one of the most beautiful destinations of north Vietnam. Co To Island is 22 kilometers from land and can only be reached by boats.
The archipelago including the biggest island Big Co To and many other smaller islands has an old name “Chang Son” which means Chang mountain, an anchoring place for ships and boats but never had residents because of the Chinese pirates until the Nguyen dynasty, some Chinese fishermen captured the pirates and then migrated to the island. Nguyen Cong Tru was the first one to build a village on the island in 1832.
04. Con Dao Island District

Con Dao district is in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, about 185 km from Vung Tau city and about 83 km from the mouth of Hau river – Can Tho. The natural area of the district is approximately 75.15 km2; the population is about 5,000 people. Con Dao has a lot of beauties. Con Dao’s living environment is clean, fresh air, crystal water, average annual temperature from 26 – 27C.
05. Con Co Island District

Con Co island district (Quang Tri province) has a natural area of approximately 2.5 km2. The island strategically locates on the entire coast of Central Vietnam that is near many domestic and international maritime routes. Therefore, the island has a massive role in the defense and security of national defense and territorial waters.
06. Hoang Sa Island District

Hoang Sa island district was established in January 1997 in Da Nang city. The archipelago covers an area of 305 km2, accounting for 24.29% of the city of Da Nang. Hoang Sa is a coral archipelago located 170 nautical miles from Danang.
07. Kien Hai Island District

Kien Hai is an island district of Kien Giang province, located off the southwestern coast. The district has an area of about 30 km2 and a population of about 25,000 people, located on islands in the Kien Hai archipelago. The islands of the Kien Hai district are still primitive with many beautiful natural scenes.
08. Ly Son Island District

Ly Son district, also called Cu Lao Ré, has an area of about 9.97km2 but the population is more than 20,460 people. The island is the remains of a volcano with 5 mouths, formed 25-30 million years ago.
09. Phu Quy Island District

Phu Quy (also known as Thu isle or Khoai Xu islet) is an island district of Binh Thuan province, with an area of 16km2, 120km from Phan Thiet city to the Southeast.
10. Phu Quoc Island District

This island district of Kien Giang province has a total area of 589.23 km2, approximately the size of the island nation of Singapore. Duong Dong Town, located in the Northwest, is the center of the island district. Phu Quoc is located 120km from Rach Gia city and 45km from Ha Tien town.
11. Truong Sa Island District

An island district of Khanh Hoa province, an area of 496km2, located in the southern part of the South China Sea, including 20 floating islands and about 80 reefs and coral reefs. The furthest island is 250 nautical miles from the mainland.
12. Van Don Island District

Van Don is an island district of Quang Ninh province with a natural area of 551.3 km2 and a population of about 39,384 people. Out of 600 islands in the district, more than 20 islands are inhabited.
