Cloud hunting in Y Ty

After the harvest, the highland Y Ty (Y Tý) is engulfed in a bunch of floating clouds like a fairyland.

Nestled on the majestic Nhui Co San mountain range, Y Ty commune is located at an altitude of more than 2,000 m, in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province. This is an ideal place for tourists and photographers to visit, hunt clouds and take pictures.

The Communal Center, school and Y Ty villages show up fanciful in the clouds. The most beautiful time to hunt clouds in Y Ty is from April to September every year. The clouds usually appear in the early morning or late afternoon and last until noon, when the sun rises.

On cold days, temperatures as low as 0-5 degrees Celsius, clouds appear in the middle of the mountain and swoop down over the valleys and the villages.

“Going through a journey of over 70 km from Sapa to Y Ty is wonderful. I feel like I’m walking in the clouds and fascinated by the beauty of the mountains. A gentle breeze makes the immense sea of clouds shiver slightly, “said photographer Pham Ngoc Thach (Hanoi). He had a photo hunt for the 2018-2019 cloud season.

On the way, visitors can see the typical house of Ha Nhi people hidden in the clouds. The walls of these houses are made from compacted soil, creating a warm space in the winter and cool in the summer. From a distance, mushroom-like houses grow among the hills of Bat Xat.

Clouds drift in the Choan Then (Choản Thèn) village in the evening.

In the photo, that is a park called Choan Then. Local people often call this place “Y Ty park”, “Cho Tham park” or “two parallel trees”, located on the vacant land at the end of the road running along with the village.

From the communal center of Y Ty, visitors only need to drive about 30 minutes to reach the village.

The high slope leads to Ngai Thau Thuong, one of the highest villages in Vietnam (over 2,100 m), belongs to Ngai Thau commune, south of Y Ty commune.

The beautiful road to Ngai Thuong Thuong is like a dream in the midst of clouds.
