The Bac Ha Winter Festival runs from November 14 to 24, 2026, in Bac Ha commune, Lao Cai province. The most useful dates for a short visit are the opening night and buffalo market on Saturday, November 14, the regular Sunday market on Sunday, November 15, or the later market pair on November 21–22. The official programme also places the festival’s closing traditional sports at the central stadium from 08:00 on Tuesday, November 24. 1
That calendar makes Bac Ha more than a one-event stop, but it does not mean every activity runs daily. The opening is at 19:30 on November 14 at Bac Ha Night Market. Buffalo markets are scheduled for the mornings of November 14 and 21; Sunday markets for the mornings of November 15 and 22. Horse racing is listed at the central stadium between November 14 and 21, but no day-by-day heat timetable is published. 1
For most travellers, the practical choice is between an overnight visit for November 14–15 and a market-focused day trip for November 22. Neither requires assuming transport is faster, cheaper or more available than the sources establish.
The dates that matter
Here is the festival calendar in the form a visitor can actually use:
| Date | Confirmed programme | What it means for planning |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday, Nov 14 | Buffalo market in the morning; opening ceremony at 19:30 at Bac Ha Night Market; horse-racing programme listed from this date | Best date for an overnight plan if you want both a morning market and the festival opening. |
| Sunday, Nov 15 | Bac Ha Sunday market in the morning; horse-racing programme remains listed through Nov 21 | A strong second morning after the opening, but do not assume a race heat is scheduled that day. |
| Saturday, Nov 21 | Buffalo market in the morning; horse-racing programme listed through this date | Useful for a second weekend plan, subject to confirming the race timetable locally. |
| Sunday, Nov 22 | Bac Ha Sunday market in the morning | The clearest choice for a market-led day trip. It does not include the Nov 14 opening. |
| Tuesday, Nov 24 | Traditional ethnic sports from 08:00 at the central stadium, followed by arts, awards and closing activities | A separate closing-day visit, not a substitute for the opening weekend. |
The authority’s announcement places activities across the cultural market, Hoang A Tuong Mansion, the central stadium and villages. That spread matters: an 11-day festival is not a promise that one central stage will be active all day throughout the period. 1
Which visit suits you: overnight or day trip?
Option one: stay overnight for November 14–15
Choose this plan if the opening ceremony matters, or if you want Bac Ha at two different rhythms. Arrive with enough margin to settle in before the 19:30 programme at Bac Ha Night Market. The next morning, make the Sunday market your anchor rather than squeezing in every listed attraction.
This option gives you the best chance of seeing the opening-night atmosphere and the Sunday market without turning either into a rushed transfer stop. It leaves room for Hoang A Tuong Mansion, Bac Ha Temple or a nearby village if conditions and access allow. The notice names Bản Phố 1 and 2, Phéc Bủng, Ngải Thầu Hill and Na Hối as possible places to explore, but publishes no same-day route, opening-hours grid or guaranteed access arrangement for each. 1
Treat the itinerary as a sequence of priorities: opening first, market second, optional sights third. If weather, road conditions, crowding or a delayed connection changes the day, the trip still works because its main experiences are not dependent on completing a long checklist.
Option two: make November 22 a market day
Choose Sunday, November 22 if your goal is the traditional Sunday market and you do not need the opening ceremony. Tell a driver or accommodation host: “Bac Ha Sunday market, morning of November 22.” Build the day around the market, then decide whether daylight and confirmed local access allow a nearby cultural or landscape stop.
A day trip is less forgiving than an overnight stay. A late departure, crowds, rain or a return connection can quickly remove flexibility. Do not plan to see the November 14 opening and return the same night unless you have confirmed the complete door-to-door transport chain; the festival announcement supplies no transport schedules or guaranteed return service.
The later Saturday–Sunday pair, November 21–22, can also work as an overnight visit. It combines the second buffalo market with the Sunday market, while the horse-racing programme is still listed through November 21. Again, the race item is a date range, not a published promise of a particular race at a particular hour.
Connecting through Lao Cai without overplanning
Lao Cai is the sensible regional connection point for a Bac Ha journey. Separate two questions: how you will reach Lao Cai, and how you will continue to Bac Ha. The festival is in Bac Ha commune, not Lao Cai city, and a booking ending in Lao Cai is not automatically a Bac Ha transfer.
Read destination labels literally: the Tonkin Heritage Express listing includes “Sapa” in its title, but identifies the rail route as Hanoi–Lao Cai, not Bac Ha.3 Neither a Sa Pa label nor a Lao Cai ticket proves that a Bac Ha connection is included. Confirm the actual arrival point, the handover between services, luggage arrangements and the latest onward departure before committing to a tight festival-day plan.
Book the Hanoi–Lao Cai journey and the onward Bac Ha road leg as separate decisions. Before paying, confirm the train or vehicle’s actual endpoint, your pickup location and what happens if the first leg is late. A ticket ending at Lao Cai is not festival admission or proof of an onward Bac Ha connection.

At our November 8 check, it rated 4.6/5 from 20 reviews; November 13 at 21:45 in an Indigo shared cabin returned a positive two-person quote. Confirmation takes up to 48 hours, and cancellation within 15 days carries a 100% fee. Arrange the onward Bac Ha transfer separately; this is not a festival ticket or package.
Once in Lao Cai province, use a current local source for the road leg to Bac Ha. Ask the accommodation or transport provider where the service actually departs, how far it goes into Bac Ha and whether the return plan matches your market or opening-night priority. If you are travelling for the November 14 opening, leave a buffer rather than treating a same-day arrival as guaranteed. If you are travelling for the November 22 market, confirm how early you must leave and where you will rejoin your onward route.
Our older Bac Ha Plateau background guide is useful for general landscape, market and food context, but its transport details and seasonal descriptions are evergreen background, not current 2026 fares, schedules or access information. For wider inspiration, the North Vietnam stories archive provides regional context; neither page replaces a current transport check.
What not to assume about the festival
Do not assume “November 14–24” means the main programme is daily. The official notice gives a festival window and names several activities, but the published details are concentrated on specific market dates, the opening, the horse-racing date range and the November 24 closing sports. 1
Do not assume a horse race runs every day. The official page includes an image caption saying the race takes place from November 14 to 21, while the independent Vietnam News report calls it a major highlight without adding a heat schedule. The careful wording is: horse racing is listed during that period at the central stadium; check locally for the actual race day and time. 1 2
Do not assume the buffalo market and Sunday market are the same event. They are separate morning fixtures on consecutive dates in each weekend pair. The buffalo market is November 14 and 21; the Sunday market is November 15 and 22. If one is your reason for travelling, name the date explicitly when arranging transport.
Do not assume every named attraction will be open or reachable. Bac Ha Temple, Hoang A Tuong Mansion, Bản Phố, Phéc Bủng, Ngải Thầu Hill and Na Hối are presented as possible places to visit, not as a guaranteed festival shuttle loop. Weather, local activity, road conditions and site management can change what is practical.
Do not assume festival admission rules or tickets. The sources reviewed do not establish a general festival entry fee, a ticketing system for the markets, or access rules for each venue. Avoid buying a product described as a festival package unless its inclusions, meeting point and cancellation terms are clearly shown.
A low-stress way to plan the day
Choose one fixed anchor and two flexible additions. For November 14–15, the fixed anchors are the 19:30 opening and the following morning’s Sunday market. For November 21–22, they are the buffalo market and Sunday market. For November 24, the fixed anchor is the 08:00 traditional sports programme at the central stadium, followed by arts, awards and closing activities. 1
Before leaving, check the weather, transfer points and latest local notice. Pack for a cold highland morning without assuming a particular temperature: warm layers, shoes for wet ground and a hands-free bag are more useful than a rigid timetable.
At the market, remember that this is a working trading space as well as a visitor experience. Ask before photographing people, animals, stalls or private homes. Do not block trading areas for a photo, and treat ethnic clothing and agricultural goods as part of living communities rather than a staged performance. Keep valuables secure and follow local instructions around animals and sporting events.
Bac Ha is rewarding precisely because the festival is distributed across market, stadium, heritage and village settings. Plan around what is confirmed, leave room for what is local and changeable, and let the difference between a date range and a detailed timetable guide your expectations.
Source and update note: Festival facts and the programme dates above were checked on November 8, 2026 against the Lao Cai provincial portal’s October 23 notice, which cites Plan 311/KH-UBND dated October 21, and against the November 2 Vietnam News report. Transport guidance is intentionally non-specific where current schedules, fares, transfer times or availability were not verified. This is planning guidance, not on-site reporting.
